Born in Tehran in 1981 and trained in Sweden and Denmark, Ali Abbasi made Shelley (2016) and then Border (2018), a Swedish fantasy that won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes. Holy Spider (2022), about a serial killer in Mashhad, won the best actress prize for Zar Amir Ebrahimi at Cannes. He then directed The Apprentice (2024).
