Born in Umeå in 1986, Amanda Kernell is a Swedish film-maker of Sami descent on her mother's side. Her debut feature Sami Blood (Sameblod, 2016) draws on the history of her own family, following a Sami girl in the 1930s who is subjected to racial biology by the Swedish state and decides to leave her community. It won the Best Debut prize at Venice and awards in Europe. Her later work includes Charter (2024).
