Born Rinku Singh in Gorakhpur in 1972, Anurag Kashyap moved to Mumbai in 1993 and co-wrote Ram Gopal Varma's Satya (1998). His directing debut Paanch (2003) was never released, and Black Friday (2004), about the 1993 Bombay bombings, was held up for two years. He then made Dev.D (2009), a contemporary Devdas, and the two-part Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), a crime saga about the Dhanbad coal mafia from the 1940s to 2009. Other films include Ugly, Raman Raghav 2.0, Mukkabaaz and Manmarziyaan. France made him a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2013.
