Born in Athens in 1966, Athina Rachel Tsangari studied in the United States, where she worked in experimental theatre and video. She was a producer of Yorgos Lanthimos's Dogtooth and, with it, a central figure of the Greek Weird Wave. Her own film Attenberg (2010), the story of a young woman who is detached from human contact and learns about sex and death from David Attenborough documentaries, won Ariane Labed the best actress prize at Venice. Chevalier (2015), about six men on a yacht who compete to be the best, was Greece's Oscar entry.
