Born in Glasgow in 1946, Bill Forsyth began as a documentary assistant and made his first films on tiny budgets with non-professional actors. That Sinking Feeling (1979) and Gregory's Girl (1980), a gentle comedy about a teenage footballer, made him famous in Britain. Local Hero (1983), in which an American oil executive is charmed by a Scottish village, won him the BAFTA for director. His quiet, whimsical comedies were a Scottish alternative to Hollywood. Later films include Comfort and Joy (1984) and Housekeeping (1987).
