Born in Bucharest in 1979 and dying in a car accident there in 2006, aged 27, Cristian Nemescu was one of the most promising young Romanian directors, with student films and shorts that won prizes. His only feature film, California Dreamin' (Endless), was unfinished at his death and was completed by his editor, then won Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2007. It is based on a true event in 1999, when a NATO train was stopped in a Romanian village by a stationmaster.
