Born in Dodge City, Kansas, in 1936 and died in Los Angeles in 2010, Dennis Hopper was a young actor who appeared alongside James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause and Giant. He co-wrote, directed and starred in Easy Rider (1969), a low-budget road movie about two bikers that became one of the surprise hits of its time and helped to launch the New Hollywood era. His next film The Last Movie (1971) was a chaotic failure that effectively ended his directing career for a decade. He kept acting, in Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet and Speed, and directed Out of the Blue (1980) and Colors (1988).
