Born in Madrid in 1945, Emilio Martínez-Lázaro is a Spanish director who moved from experimental shorts, one of which won a prize in Berlin in 1978, to commercial comedies. Amo tu cama rica (1992) was a hit, and The Other Side of the Bed (El otro lado de la cama, 2002) was a musical comedy about couples swapping partners. Eight Basque Surnames (Ocho apellidos vascos, 2014), a comedy of an Andalusian man who pretends to be Basque to impress a woman, became the highest-grossing Spanish film in history at the time.
