Guy Ritchie

British Cinema

Born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, in 1968, Guy Ritchie left school at fifteen and worked in commercials and music videos before making his first feature. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) was a surprise hit, and with Snatch (2000) he established a style of fast-talking London gangster comedy, tangled plots, quick cutting and cockney slang that was widely imitated in British cinema. He then moved to larger productions: Sherlock Holmes (2009) and its sequel, with Robert Downey Jr., The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), and the Aladdin remake, and has since returned to his gangster roots with The Gentlemen (2019). He was married to Madonna from 2000 to 2008.
