Born in Ogden, Utah, in 1929 and died in 1988, Hal Ashby began as a film editor and won an Oscar for In the Heat of the Night. Between 1970 and 1979 he directed a remarkable run of films, including Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Coming Home and Being There, that mixed comedy and humane warmth with an outsider's view of American life. After the success of that decade, his career faltered in the 1980s and he died of cancer at 59.
