Born in San Carlos, California, in 1951, Kathryn Bigelow studied painting and film theory before directing genre films with remarkable visceral energy, among them Near Dark, Point Break and Strange Days. The Hurt Locker (2008), set among an Iraq bomb-disposal unit, made her the first woman to win the Academy Award for best director. She followed it with Zero Dark Thirty (2012), on the hunt for Osama bin Laden, and Detroit (2017).
