Born in Baabdat, Lebanon, in 1974, Nadine Labaki studied audiovisual studies in Beirut and made music videos before her first feature, Caramel (2007), in which she also acted. She is known for humane, ensemble films set in Lebanon. Her third feature, Capernaum (2018), won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, making her the first Arab woman nominated in that category.
