Born in Naples in 1970, Paolo Sorrentino worked as a screenwriter before his first feature One Man Up (2001). With the actor Toni Servillo he made The Consequences of Love (2004) and Il Divo (2008), a baroque portrait of the Italian politician Giulio Andreotti. His lush, grandly composed films, owing a debt to Fellini, reached a wide audience with The Great Beauty (2013), about an ageing journalist in Rome, which won the Oscar for best foreign language film. He also made Youth (2015), the series The Young Pope, and The Hand of God (2021), a semi-autobiographical film set in 1980s Naples.
