Robert Mulligan

Classical Hollywood

Robert Mulligan (1925-2008) was born in the Bronx and came from live television. With the producer Alan J. Pakula he made a run of sensitive dramas in the early 1960s, of which To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), from Harper Lee's novel, is the best known. He directed it largely through the eyes of children and drew a lasting performance from Gregory Peck as the lawyer Atticus Finch. Summer of '42 (1971) is another warm, nostalgic film told from a boy's point of view.
