Born in Sapporo in 1963 and dying in Tokyo in 2010 at forty-six, Satoshi Kon was a manga artist and assistant to Katsuhiro Otomo before working in anime. In four feature films and a television series he blurred imagination and reality. Perfect Blue (1997) was his debut, Millennium Actress (2001) a love letter to Japanese film history, Tokyo Godfathers (2003) a Christmas story, and Paprika (2006) a dream-world thriller nominated for the Golden Lion. His unfinished fifth film, The Dreaming Machine, remains incomplete.
