Born in Rome in 1921 and died in 2015, Sergio Sollima was a writer and critic before directing spy films and politically engaged westerns. His westerns, written with an eye to leftist politics, include The Big Gundown (1966), Face to Face (1967) and Run, Man, Run (1968), and feature Tomas Milian as a charismatic outlaw. He also directed the poliziottesco Revolver, and the television adaptation of Emilio Salgari's adventure stories Sandokan, which was a huge success in Italy.
