Sofia Coppola

Women Directors

Born in New York in 1971, Sofia Coppola is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, and appeared in her father's films as a child before turning to fashion, photography and then directing. Her films, with dream-like atmospheres, soft pop soundtracks and heroines who are isolated by privilege, include The Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost in Translation (2003), which won her the Oscar for best original screenplay, and Marie Antoinette (2006). Somewhere (2010) won the Golden Lion at Venice, and she won the best director prize at Cannes for The Beguiled (2017). She also made Priscilla (2023).
