Stuart Rosenberg (1927-2007) was born in New York and directed television, including episodes of The Twilight Zone and The Defenders, before moving to cinema. Cool Hand Luke (1967), with Paul Newman as a stubborn prisoner on a Southern chain gang, remains his best-known film, and it gave Newman one of his defining roles. His later work included The Drowning Pool (1975), Voyage of the Damned (1976) and the prison drama Brubaker (1980).
