Sydney Pollack (1934-2008) was born in Lafayette, Indiana, studied acting with Sanford Meisner in New York and worked in television before directing. (1969), The Way We Were (1973), the conspiracy thriller Three Days of the Condor (1975), Tootsie (1982) and Out of Africa (1985), which won him the Best Director Oscar. He worked with Robert Redford seven times and often played small acting roles in his own and others' films.
