Jean-Pierre (born 1951) and Luc (born 1954) Dardenne, from the Liège region of Belgium, began by making documentaries and video work among industrial workers, and have written and directed all their features together. Their style is realist: hand-held camera, long takes, no music, and a focus on characters at the margins who face moral choices. La Promesse (1996) was their breakthrough. They won the Palme d'Or twice, for Rosetta (1999) and The Child (2005), and also won prizes for The Son and Two Days, One Night (2014).
