Plot

Ventura, an old Cape Verdean construction worker, wanders in the public housing of Lisbon, after the demolition of the Fontainhas slum. He visits his adult children, who are scattered across the new apartment blocks, and tells them stories and recites letters. Pedro Costa's 2006 film, shot on digital video in dim, painterly images with non-professional actors, is a landmark of slow cinema.

Sinekatalog’s take

Pedro Costa's slow, dreamlike film follows an elderly Cape Verdean labourer wandering Lisbon's new housing blocks, visiting his scattered children. Shot in rich darkness with Ventura, it is a hypnotic and moving poetry of displacement.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
