Plot
During a yacht trip near a volcanic island off Sicily, a young woman, Anna, disappears. Her lover Sandro and her friend Claudia search for her, and as the investigation goes on, they begin an affair of their own, indifferent to the mystery. Michelangelo Antonioni's 1960 film was booed at Cannes, but it was soon recognised as a masterpiece of modern cinema for its depiction of alienation, its open narrative and its landscape imagery.
Sinekatalog’s take
Antonioni's drama begins as a search for a missing woman on an island, then drifts into emptiness and romance. Ambiguous and elusive, it was booed at Cannes and later hailed as a modernist landmark.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
