Plot

In a Serer village in Senegal, a young man grows peanuts for export, and cannot afford to marry because the price keeps falling and the harvest fails. Through his and other villagers' stories, the film shows the effect of a cash-crop economy on a rural community. Safi Faye's 1975 film, a blend of documentary and fiction, was one of the first films by an African woman to be shown internationally.

Sinekatalog’s take

Safi Faye's essay-documentary follows a Serer village in Senegal, where a young man grows peanuts for export and cannot afford to marry as prices fall. Gentle and clear-eyed, it is a pioneering, personal film on cash-crop economics and rural life.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
