Plot
Mash Hassan, a poor villager in Iran, is devoted to his only cow, the pride of the village. When the cow dies while he is away, the villagers hide the truth, and he gradually begins to identify with the animal, to the point of losing his sanity. Dariush Mehrjui's 1969 film, based on a story by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi, was banned at first, and is the founding work of the Iranian New Wave.
Sinekatalog’s take
Dariush Mehrjui's landmark Iranian drama follows a villager who comes to identify with his dead cow. Stark, poetic and unnerving, it launched the Iranian New Wave and was banned before its acclaim.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
