Plot

Antonio, a young soldier freshly demobilised, returns to his village near Naples and searches for work so he can marry Carmela, the girl he loves. Without a trade, he tries a series of odd jobs, always meeting bureaucracy and the quarrelling of his poor community. Renato Castellani's 1952 film is a comedy, but the humour is based on real social problems, with local people playing many of the roles. It won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was an important work of the neorealist tradition.

Sinekatalog’s take

Renato Castellani's neorealist comedy follows a demobilised soldier near Naples hunting odd jobs to marry his sweetheart. Warm, lively and sharply funny about bureaucracy and poverty, it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
