Plot

In Belgrade during the Second World War, a group of people hide in a cellar to escape the Nazis, and are led to believe by their leader that the war is still on for decades. Meanwhile, the black marketeer Marko and his friend Blacky become involved in the history of Yugoslavia from the German invasion to the civil war of the 1990s. Emir Kusturica's 1995 film, a wild mix of comedy, tragedy and brass music, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Sinekatalog’s take

Kusturica's tragicomic epic follows two friends and a wartime hideout, through decades of Yugoslavia's history. Loud, brass-band-driven and furious, it divided critics over its politics but dazzles as spectacle.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
