1940'ta New York'ta doğan, 2017'de ölen George A. Romero, Night of the Living Dead'i (1968) arkadaşlarıyla küçük bir bütçeyle çekmeden önce Pittsburgh'da reklam ve endüstriyel film işlerinde çalıştı. Et yiyen ölüleri, kasvetli sonu ve ırk ile Vietnam dönemi üzerine söylenmemiş yorumu korku sinemasını değiştirdi ve modern zombiyi yarattı. Ardından alışveriş merkezinde geçen, tüketim toplumuna hiciv olan Dawn of the Dead'i (1978) ve Day of the Dead'i yaptı; kariyeri boyunca Hollywood dışında çalıştı.
