Born in New York in 1940 and died in 2017, George A. Romero worked in Pittsburgh on commercials and industrial films before making Night of the Living Dead (1968) with friends on a tiny budget. Its flesh-eating dead, its bleak ending and its unspoken comment on race and the Vietnam era changed horror cinema and established the modern zombie. He followed it with Dawn of the Dead (1978), a satire on consumerism set in a shopping mall, and Day of the Dead, working outside Hollywood throughout his career.
