1889'da Maisons-Laffitte'te doğan, 1963'te Milly-la-Forêt'te ölen Jean Cocteau, gerçeküstücüler, Picasso, Stravinsky ve Diaghilev arasında dolaşan bir şair, romancı, ressam, oyun yazarı ve tasarımcıydı. Film kariyeri, Vicomte de Noailles'in finanse ettiği rüya mantıklı bir fantezi olan The Blood of a Poet (1930) ile başladı. Büyük filmleri savaştan sonra geldi: Beauty and the Beast (1946), mitleri modern Paris'e taşıyan Orpheus (1950) ve son film Testament of Orpheus (1960). Sinemaya "iş başındaki ölüm" dedi ve Fransız Yeni Dalgası üzerinde büyük bir etkisi oldu.
