South Africa

South African cinema was marked by apartheid, which limited Black filmmakers and shaped the industry through censorship and subsidy. Since 1994 a freer cinema has appeared, with Gavin Hood's Tsotsi winning the Oscar, Mark Dornford-May adapting opera and theatre in Xhosa, and Neill Blomkamp turning township anxieties into science fiction.
