Aleksandar Petrović

Balkan Cinema

Born in Paris in 1929 and dying in Belgrade in 1994, Aleksandar Petrović was a film critic and a leading name in Yugoslav cinema of the 1960s. His films combined a poetic realism with a modernist, fragmentary style. Three (Tri, 1965), made of three stories of the Second World War, and I Even Met Happy Gypsies (Skupljači perja, 1967), a drama of Roma feather-collectors in Vojvodina, were both nominated for the Oscar for foreign language film. The latter won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. He later made an adaptation of Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita (1972).
