Born in Bucharest in 1979 and trained in Berlin, Alexander Nanau is a Romanian-German documentary maker. His film Toto and His Sisters (2014) follows siblings in a Roma neighbourhood. Collective (2019), which shows investigative journalists exposing corruption in the Romanian health system after a nightclub fire, was nominated for two Oscars (best documentary and best international feature) and won the LUX Audience Award. It is a patient, observational film that unfolds like a thriller.
