Born in Fiesole in 1981 to an Italian mother and a German beekeeper father, and brought up in rural Umbria, Alice Rohrwacher studied classics in Turin and screenwriting at the Scuola Holden. Her work blends magical realism with Italian neorealism, often about adolescence and rural life. Her sister, the actress Alba Rohrwacher, appears in many of her films. The Wonders (2014) won the Grand Prix at Cannes, Happy as Lazzaro (2018) the prize for best screenplay, and La chimera (2023) competed for the Palme d'Or. Her short Le pupille was nominated for an Oscar.
