Born in Dartford, Kent, in 1961, Andrea Arnold began as a children's television presenter and dancer before directing. Her short film Wasp (2003) won an Oscar, and her features are intense, close-up portraits of young women in tough social conditions. Red Road (2006), made as part of a Danish-backed project, won the Jury Prize at Cannes, as did Fish Tank (2009), set in an Essex council estate. She shoots in the Academy ratio with a hand-held camera, and made American Honey (2016), a road movie across the United States, and Bird (2024).
