Born in Haifa in 1962, Ari Folman served in the Israeli army during the 1982 Lebanon war, an experience that became the subject of his animated documentary Waltz with Bashir (2008), which won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award. He later made The Congress (2013), a live-action and animation hybrid, and the animated Where Is Anne Frank (2021).
