Israeli cinema began with Zionist documentary and light 'bourekas' comedies, and since the 1980s has been shaped by questions of war, military service and the occupation. A wave of films in the 2000s and 2010s, such as Waltz with Bashir and Lebanon, turned military memory into animation and chamber drama. Filmmakers from Arab and Jewish communities now co-exist in a lively festival-driven cinema.
