Born in Tel Aviv in 1962, Samuel Maoz served as a gunner in a tank in the 1982 Lebanon War, an experience he turned into his debut Lebanon (2009), a film shot almost entirely from the inside of a tank. It won the Golden Lion at Venice. Foxtrot (2017), a three-part story of a couple whose son is reported killed while on military service, won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice and was nominated for an Oscar. It was condemned by some Israeli politicians for its portrayal of the army.
