Born in Istanbul, Azra Deniz Okyay began in photography at twelve, studied cinema at Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, and worked at Michel Gondry's production company Partizan. Back in Turkey in 2010 she became the first woman to direct at the advertising house Depo, and made short films, music videos and video art. Her debut feature Hayaletler (Ghosts, 2020) won her the Golden Orange for best director.
