Born in Sydney in 1962, Baz Luhrmann grew up in a small New South Wales town where his father ran a petrol station and a cinema. His 'Red Curtain Trilogy' of Strictly Ballroom (1992), Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge! (2001) are flamboyant, theatrical and rhythmically edited musical films, mixing anachronistic pop songs with classic stories. He has also made The Great Gatsby (2013) and Elvis (2022). He won the BAFTA for director for Romeo + Juliet, and he is often described as a maximalist who makes cinema as spectacle.
