Blockbuster Auteurs

Directors who combine large-scale popular filmmaking with a personal vision.

Some directors have managed to make films that fill multiplexes and still carry a recognisable personal signature. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas created the modern blockbuster with Jaws and Star Wars, and James Cameron, Ridley Scott and Robert Zemeckis kept pushing the technology of spectacle. Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Alfonso Cuarón, Peter Jackson and Tim Burton made large-scale films that also hold complex ideas, from time and memory to politics and mythology. The category is rather a question: how much room for personal vision is left when a film costs a hundred million dollars or more?
