Born in Pukerua Bay, New Zealand, in 1961, Peter Jackson taught himself film-making as a teenager, and made the splatter comedy Bad Taste (1987) with friends on weekends. Heavenly Creatures (1994), about a real murder in 1950s Christchurch, introduced Kate Winslet and brought an Oscar nomination for the screenplay. His adaptation of The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003), shot in New Zealand as a single production, won eleven Oscars for The Return of the King and put the country on the map of film-making. He later made King Kong (2005) and The Hobbit films, and the documentary They Shall Not Grow Old (2018).
