New Zealand's film identity grew from the 1970s and 80s, helped by the Film Commission. Jane Campion's The Piano won the Palme d'Or and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy made the country a major production hub and a symbol of fantasy landscape. Māori storytelling and a distinctive dry humour run through the independent scene.
