Born in New York in 1970, Todd Phillips began as a documentary maker with Hated (1993) on the punk singer GG Allin. He then became known for comedies: Road Trip (2000), Old School (2003) and The Hangover (2009), which became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy in the US at the time. Joker (2019), a dark character study of a failed comedian becoming the Batman villain, won the Golden Lion at Venice and an Oscar for Joaquin Phoenix. A sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, followed in 2024.
