Born in South Shields in 1937, Ridley Scott came from art school and a successful career in television commercials. He established himself as a master of imagined worlds with The Duellists (1977), Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982), which fused science fiction with film noir. He made Thelma & Louise and Gladiator, which won the Oscar for best picture, and has continued to direct large-scale epics and thrillers for more than four decades.
