Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1985, Damien Chazelle was a drummer in his school jazz band, an experience that fed his debut Whiplash (2014), about the abusive relationship between a drummer and his teacher. La La Land (2016), a homage to the Hollywood musical with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, won six Oscars. At 32, he became the youngest person to win the Oscar for best director. He then made First Man (2018), about Neil Armstrong, and Babylon (2022), a chaotic epic of Hollywood's transition to sound.
