New Hollywood

Born in Modesto, California, in 1944, George Lucas studied at the University of Southern California, where he made the short THX 1138: 4EB, and was one of the film-school generation that arrived with New Hollywood. After the feature THX 1138 (1971), he made American Graffiti (1973), a nostalgic comedy about teenagers in 1962, which was a big hit. Star Wars (1977) became a global phenomenon, created a franchise and the effects company Industrial Light & Magic, and with its sequels transformed the film industry. He founded Lucasfilm and returned to direct three prequels from 1999.
