Born in Burbank, California, in 1958, Tim Burton trained as an animator at Disney, where he felt out of place, and made the short films Vincent and Frankenweenie. His features have a gothic, cartoonish and macabre look, with outsiders as heroes, set in suburbs and dark fairy tales. After Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) and Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989) was a worldwide hit. Edward Scissorhands (1990) began a long collaboration with Johnny Depp, which includes Ed Wood (1994), and he works regularly with the composer Danny Elfman and the actress Helena Bonham Carter.
