Born in Newark in 1940, Brian De Palma emerged from the New Hollywood generation alongside Scorsese and Spielberg. He is a master of suspense, with split screens, long takes and a debt to Hitchcock, and his films about voyeurism and violence, such as Sisters, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, divided critics. He also made popular successes such as Carrie, Scarface and The Untouchables, and the first Mission: Impossible. Admirers consider him a great formalist; his detractors point to the violence and the borrowing.
