Born in Huesca in 1932 and died in Madrid in 2023, Carlos Saura was the leading Spanish director of the Franco and post-Franco era. He used allegory and memory to portray the repressions of the dictatorship, in The Hunt (1966) and Cría cuervos (1976), the latter with Ana Torrent as a child haunted by her dead mother. In the 1980s he turned to flamenco and dance films, such as Blood Wedding, Carmen and El amor brujo, with the choreographer Antonio Gades.
