Born in Pontoise in 1978, Céline Sciamma studied screenwriting at La Fémis. Her first three features, Water Lilies (2007), Tomboy (2011) and Girlhood (2014), form a trilogy on adolescent identity and gender, with Girlhood following a group of Black girls in the Paris suburbs. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), a romance between a painter and her subject in eighteenth-century Brittany, won the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes, and Petite Maman (2021) is a short fairy tale about a girl who meets her mother as a child. She is known for her attention to women's looks and their absence in conventional cinema.
